IRCTC Rail Connect Guide: Booking Train Tickets and Tatkal Basics

Set up your IRCTC account, book a reserved ticket step by step, understand CNF, RAC and waiting list, and prepare for Tatkal booking.

IRCTC Rail Connect is the official app of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for booking reserved train tickets. You can search for trains, check seat availability, book, cancel and check your PNR status from your phone. This guide walks you through setting up your account, making a regular booking, understanding ticket status and preparing for Tatkal.

AppStepwise is an independent guide, not an official government service, and is not connected to IRCTC or Indian Railways.

Before you install

IRCTC Rail Connect is free. Install it only from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, and check that the publisher is IRCTC. Look-alike apps and websites with railway names and images do exist, so check before you enter any login or payment details.

Create and prepare your IRCTC account

  1. Register

Open the app and choose to register. Pick a username and password, and fill in your details carefully. Your name and date of birth should match your ID.

  2. Verify your mobile number and email

Confirm both with the OTPs sent to them.

  3. Authenticate with Aadhaar

Complete Aadhaar authentication from your profile. Aadhaar-authenticated accounts can book more tickets each month, get priority when bookings open for a date, and are needed for online Tatkal booking.

  4. Save your regular passengers

Add family members to your master passenger list with their names, ages and ID details. This saves precious time during booking.

  5. Set up quick sign-in

Where the app offers it, set up a PIN or fingerprint login on your own phone.

How to book a regular ticket

  1. Sign in and choose to book a ticket.
  2. Enter the from and to stations, journey date, class and quota. General quota is right for most travellers.
  3. Search, then compare trains, availability and fares for your class.
  4. Add passengers, preferably from your master list, and choose berth preferences if you have any. Preferences depend on availability.
  5. Review everything: train number, date, boarding station, names and ages.
  6. Pay using UPI, a card, net banking or the IRCTC eWallet.
  7. Note your PNR number. You will also receive the ticket details by SMS and email.

Understanding ticket status

StatusWhat it means
CNF (Confirmed)You have a confirmed berth or seat. Coach and berth details appear on the ticket or are updated when the chart is prepared.
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation)You can board and will get a seat, but you may share a berth with another passenger until a full berth becomes free.
WL (Waiting List)You do not have a seat yet. You move up as others cancel, so check your PNR status as the date comes closer.
Chart preparedThe final passenger list for the train is ready. A fully waitlisted e-ticket is then cancelled automatically and refunded as per railway rules.

Passengers holding a fully waitlisted e-ticket are not allowed to travel in reserved coaches. If your ticket is still on the waiting list after the chart is prepared, you need another ticket to travel.

Tatkal basics

Tatkal is a quota meant for last-minute travel. Tatkal tickets cost more than regular tickets, and on busy routes seats can go within minutes.

  • Booking opens one day before the journey date, counted from the date the train leaves its starting station.
  • Booking for AC classes opens at 10 am, and for non-AC classes such as Sleeper at 11 am.
  • Online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account, and you may be asked to confirm an OTP while booking.
  • Confirmed Tatkal tickets generally get no refund on cancellation, except in situations covered by railway refund rules, such as a cancelled train.
  • Railways revises booking rules from time to time, so check the latest notices on IRCTC's official app or website before an important trip.

How to prepare for a Tatkal booking

  1. Finish Aadhaar authentication well in advance, not on the morning of booking.
  2. Save passenger details in your master list.
  3. Keep your UPI app or card ready, and make sure your bank's limits cover the fare.
  4. Sign in a few minutes before booking opens, on a stable internet connection.
  5. Check the train number, date and class twice before you pay.

On the day of travel

  • Carry an original photo ID of the kind Railways accepts, such as Aadhaar, a driving licence, voter ID, PAN card or passport. At least one passenger on an e-ticket must carry one, but it is simplest for every adult to carry their own.
  • Show the e-ticket on your phone, or the SMS with your PNR details, to the ticket checker along with your ID. A printout is not required.
  • Check your PNR status before leaving home for any update on coach and berth.
  • For train running status, enquiries and complaints, 139 is Indian Railways' helpline number.

Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel from the booked tickets section of the app. How much you get back depends on the class, the ticket status and how close to departure you cancel, as set out in railway refund rules. Refunds go back to the payment method you used. For special cases, such as a train running very late when you did not travel, the app lets you file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) to claim a refund.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aadhaar authentication necessary to book tickets?

It is needed for online Tatkal booking. It also raises your monthly booking limit and gives you priority when bookings open for a date, so it is worth completing early.

Can I book tickets for someone else?

Yes, you can book for family and friends from your account, and they must carry their own ID. Booking tickets on a personal account to resell them is not allowed.

What is a PNR number?

It is the 10-digit number that identifies your booking. Use it to check your ticket status in the app.

Do I need a printed ticket?

No. An e-ticket shown on your phone, or the SMS with your PNR details, is accepted along with a valid original ID.
