WhatsApp Voice Messages: Listen Privately, Speed Up or Read as Text
Four built-in WhatsApp features most people never use: the earpiece trick, faster playback, private transcripts and reviewing your own voice note before it goes.
Voice messages are convenient to send and inconvenient to receive. Someone records three minutes while walking in traffic, and you are in a meeting, on a bus, or simply not in the mood to put your phone on speaker. WhatsApp has quietly added features that solve most of this. This guide covers how to listen privately, how to speed messages up, how to read a voice message as text without anyone else hearing it, and how to check your own recording before you send it.
1. Listen privately with the earpiece trick
Tap play on a voice message and lift the phone to your ear as if you were taking a call. The phone's proximity sensor notices, switches playback from the loudspeaker to the earpiece and turns the screen off. Anyone nearby hears nothing, and you don't need headphones. Move the phone away and it switches back.
2. Play long messages faster
While a voice message is playing, a small speed button appears next to it. Tap it to switch between normal speed, 1.5× and 2×. Most people find 1.5× easy to follow; 2× works well for slow speakers and long explanations. The setting applies to the message you are playing, so you can slow down again for something important.
3. Read a voice message as text
WhatsApp can turn voice messages into text, which is ideal when you can't listen at all. According to WhatsApp, transcripts are generated on your device, so no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages.
Turn the feature on
Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, and switch it on. Choose the transcript language.
Transcribe a message
Long-press the voice message and tap Transcribe. The text appears under the message.
Check the language
Transcripts work in selected languages, and support has been expanding. If a message is in a different language from your setting, the result may be poor.

4. Check your own voice note before sending
Instead of holding the microphone button, slide it upwards to lock the recording. You can then speak hands-free, and when you stop you get a preview: play it back, and send it only if you are happy. If you said something you shouldn't, delete the recording instead of sending it.
Other voice-message settings worth knowing
- Voice messages you receive are saved in your chat. Use the chat's media settings and your phone storage manager to clear old ones if storage runs low.
- Auto-download: in Settings, Storage and data, you can choose whether audio downloads automatically on mobile data.
- Forwarded voice notes: a forwarded voice message is labelled as forwarded, which is a useful clue when a message claims to come from someone important.
- View once: WhatsApp supports voice messages that can be played only once, for sensitive information.
Be careful with "voice message" scams
Scammers know people are curious about voice messages. Be wary of texts or emails claiming "you have a new voice message" with a link to a website, or asking you to install an app to hear it. WhatsApp voice messages play inside WhatsApp; you never need an extra app, a website login or a payment to listen to one.
- Don't open links that promise to reveal who sent you a voice message or who viewed your profile.
- Never share the six-digit WhatsApp verification code, even with someone claiming to be from WhatsApp.
- Turn on two-step verification in Settings, Account, for an extra PIN.
Can WhatsApp read my transcripts?
WhatsApp says transcripts are generated on your device, and that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages.
Why don't I have the transcript option?
Update WhatsApp to the latest version. Features roll out gradually and depend on your language.
Does the other person know I listened at 2× speed?
No. Playback speed only affects your phone.
Can I listen without the sender seeing blue ticks?
Read receipts depend on your privacy settings. If you turn read receipts off, others won't see them, but you won't see theirs either.
